Revised storyboard units shared by my colleagues

Updated: Jun 18, 2018

June 12, 2018

After the discussion of the readings, we started to share our initial final storyboard unit.

Our professor gives us instructions for how we will present.

1 Duration: No more than 10 minutes

2 Overview of context and key instructional process and resources

3 The weaknesses and how to enhance the instruction.

The first presenter: Garmondyu

The title of the instructional unit: Contextualizing content for rural schools

A list of key comments:

a) Where are the teachers from?

These teachers are from the urban areas in different communities and just moved into the rural areas.

b) Are the teachers going to the same rural community?

The teachers work for one religion for the public school. The professor concerns how the teachers work and build the network to do the project.

c) Give the teachers some more hands-on materials. How can facilitators fully engage all the teachers in the activities.

d) Do you have any standards or rubrics to evaluate if your seminar is successful or not?

That's a good question. It might be a good idea that the facilitators would like to see in the future. The focus in my design is how the teachers integrate all the ideas into the materials. There should be some reflections or checklist along the way.

Something relevant to my project:

a) His is also a training session that is similar to mine. He explained how long the seminar will take. This is not mentioned in my context. However, if we want to introduce the overview of the training, it is necessary to talk about this.

b) He consider teachers' background, culture, previous teaching experience in his design. This is great because this is the fundamental part for the whole instructional unit.

The second presenter: Kenya

The title of the instructional unit: Google Tools for teaching and learning

A list of key comments:

a) Add some tests for all the learners for the evaluation.

b) There should be two follow-up sessions, one is short, the other is long-term session.

c) Follow-up activities are the open space for all the teachers. All the teachers can upload their work and share. They are extra session.

d) Trainers should track how comfortable learners feel when they spend time taking the training.

Something relevant to my project:

a) Hers is also a training session that is similar to mine. She illustrates the rationale for extend the estimated time from one hour to six hours. For the professional development, instructors can have time to look into the design and can do exercises together or individually. They can have a discussion session.

b) She uses a game called Scavenger Hunt to promote an overview of the training content. This is a good start to engage the learners to learning.

c) She has a good control of the pace of the sessions, that is very important in design.

d) The goals are very clear. Each session has introduction.

The third presenter: Abubakr

The title of the instructional unit:

Scratch4kids-Unit 1: Exploring Scratch

A list of key comments:

a) About evaluation?

In Application Phase, this is a program, and there are evaluations.

b) Teachable moments^_^: A storyboard screen make it easy for others to see in one page. Get all the information into one page. Put the text into single space. People need to see all the information in one page.

c) As the activity deliverables show, the statements should be like this way: Teachers will be able to ...

d) How do you estimate time for activities?

It's hard to answer. We do our best estimate. Homework is not supervised. As for the homework to be done at home, people are at different paces, according to what learners are, strategies, how much time you spend on the homework assignments. Sometimes we would like to give learners more time to ask them to practice.

Something relevant to my project:

a) Very interesting topic to develop

b) The outline is very clear and simple

The last presenter: Me ( Lei Wang )

The title of the instructional unit:

Flipping the classroom

A list of key comments:

( From my professor)

a) I really like it. It's more straight lined.

b) It has really nice group work, individual work, team work.

c) Opportunities for students to think about what the flipped classroom model is and practice for teachers and get feedback.

d) I love the debate. That's really good stuff.

e) I really like the activities.

f) Guest person screen should be divided into 2 parts. One is for class, the other is only for homework because they are very different instruction strategies. Bring more details for what I expect the teachers to bring for the next session, how they will share with each other.

g) Presentation screen should also be split into two different ones. The first one should be the review of the design, comments and questions. Group work should be another storyboard screen. Provide more details about that. Talk about the big challenge for whose lesson plan will be revised and presented.

(From Garmondyu)

h) You did a good job! Very engaging sessions!

The problems I found:

a) The flow chart is too small.

b) The illustration is replicated twice.

c) The image

I am grateful to our professor and peer's feedback. I also learned a lot from my peers! This is a really engaging virtual session!
